Description: History of the Imâms and Seyyids of 'Omân from A.D. 661-1856; translated from the original Arabic, and edited, with notes, appendices, and an introduction, continuing the history down to 1870 - Salîl-ibn-Razîk - 1871. A very rare first edition from the Hakluyt Society, with quite scarce large fold-out map at front. From the esteemed private collection of Esmond Bradley Martin, with his purchase slip laid in at rear. Martin was a geographer and conservation who largely pioneered the movement to combat ivory, horn, and tusk trading in Africa, which is believed to have led to his eventual murder at his estate in Kenya, with additional ties to the Carnegie Steel empire. A quite unique provenance. Translation by George Percy Badger, an Arabic scholar and missionary. Badger's editorial comments account for the first 140 pages of the book; they include a comprehensive overview of the relative merits of the texts concerning Oman by various sources. Then, Salil b. Raziq's stories are presented, as the History of the Imâms and Seyyids of 'Omân. An extremely important work. Blue covers, as issued, with gilt ship and lettering. Some marks and wear to cover, including fading at spine and rubbing at edges. Internally, browning to EPs. Some intermittent foxing and waviness to pages. Separation at front hinge. Slight cracking of paper at rear hinge. Map with some tears at creases, but otherwise nice condition. Labels to front EP and FFEP of the Geographical Association, Manchester, UK. Good condition. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.. The book is exactly as pictured. Any questions, please ask.
