Hibiscus syriacus Red Heart is a perennial shrub in the Malvaceae family. Common names are Rose of Sharon, Shrub Althea, and Red Heart. It grows to ten feet tall and six feet wide. It will bloom to its full potential in full sun, but it can also flower in the shade. It blooms from mid-summer to early fall. The deer won't bother this one, but you will see plenty of bees, butterflies, and birds. Keep it moist with well-drained soil. An excellent flowering deciduous shrub with skinny upright branches and bright green foliage. These have large white flowers with a red center. A perfect accent or container specimen. It works as a foundation plant, hedge, or privacy screen. Zones 5-8 Germination You should use a well-drained, sandy compost with sand or grit. Sow seeds on top of the soil and tamp in. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep it moist until germination. Temps 75-85F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
