Description: Nice Hewlett Packard Model# 5517A (S/N# 2532A03620) Laser Head that was removed from defunct scientific equipment. The laser head was part of an interferometer. It is missing its original cover and has a cable assembly that connects to the Laser head and to a Male-Female bulkhead feedthrough adapter. We connected an 0-20Vdc power supply set to 15Vdc (Power Supply and quick clip cables are NOT INCLUDED)to the fuse holder (+)in the unit and to system ground(-) and the rear panel laser ON annunciator illuminated and the laser came on as shown in the pictures in the ad. On the bottom of the unit is a label that says Laser tube# 17538 and output 28.5mW. Here is some info that I found on the internet regarding this Laser Head: “The HP 5517A (Figure 1-1) is intended to be used in the 5501A system as a laser source. This system is covered in a separate manual titled "5501A Laser Transducer System". The Laser Head is supplied with 2 Screws M8 X 1.25 X 25 mm HP Part Number 0515-0798. Interconnect Cable 10791A/B/C is available as an accessory.The Laser Head consists of a thermally-tuned laser tube, control circuits, a reference receiver, and a high-voltage power supply. The tube provides a coherent collimated light source consisting of two orthogonally polarized frequency components. One component is polarized parallel to the plane of the mounting feet and the other is polarized perpendicular to that plane.Before the laser beam is emitted from the Laser Head, a portion of it is sampled. Most of this sample is fed into the reference receiver to determine the difference in frequency between the two optical components. This difference frequency is called the Reference Frequency. The remainder of the sampled beam is used to control the tuning of the laser”. This item appears to be in fair overall physical and cosmetic condition as judging condition is subjective.While the Laser illuminated as shown in the picture, it is a “tube” and we have NO idea as to its actual condition or remaining life, so it is NOT WARRANTIED to be operational. Due to the afore mentioned fact and since this item is over 30 years old, it is being sold for PARTS or REPAIRS per eBay protocol, and as USED, Strictly, AS-IS.
