He first enrolled at the Art Students' League of New York (1941-1942) and then served in the U.S. Army in France during the Second World War. Following the end of the war Fink resumed his artistic training and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1948. He then taught drawing and design at the University of Kansas (1949) and at the Albright-Knox Art School, Buffalo, New York (1950). A year later he resigned to accept the Chaloner Fellowship, which enabled him to travel and study in Europe. In 1958 Herbert Fink graduated from Yale University with a Masters of Fine Arts and for the following three years taught art classes at both Yale and at the Rhode Island School of Design. Herbert Fink was made Professor of Art and Chairman of the Art Department at Southern Illinois University in 1961. He later became Director of the School of Fine Art at that University and held this post until his retirement after 1987. During the last part of his life, Herbert Fink worked from his studio in Rockport, Maine. In recognition for his distinguished work as an artist, teacher, arts administrator and scholar, Herbert Fink received numerous awards. He received the Chaloner Fellowship on two occasions, the Tiffany Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Ford Foundation Purchase Award. He was made a Trustee of the Tiffany Foundation as well as the John R. and Eleonor R. Mitchell Foundation. Fink was elected to the National Academy of Design and was honored by Governor James Thompson as the Visual Artist of the Year for the State of Illinois in 1986. Herbert Fink's first one man exhibition of his art took place in 1962. Since that time his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions such as Ohio State University (1969), Cornell University (1978), the San Diego Museum of Art (1979), the University of Mississippi (1981) and the Republic of China (1986).
