Description: This document framed under glass is a legal English deed written three years after the accession of the memorable Henry VIII to the throne at age 18 and his immediate marriage to Catherine of Aragon. As with most medieval and post-medieval deeds, it shares the common physical shape and indented form, hence the name “indenture”. Handwritten in Latin on vellum (sheepskin), the deed follows the pattern beginning with a long sentence followed by a shorter sentence witnessing the first. This is followed by the clauses describing the various aspects of the transfer of property: The “consideration” (the sum of money), the description of the property involved, and the time period of the deed. Because of the time period in which this document was written, the deed is much smaller than more modern pieces. From the 17th century onward, such documents involved several pages and were usually written in English. This document with ribbon is in very good overall condition, with a viewing hole cut on the verso side, mounted on a fabric background under glass in a simple molded frame. Minor imperfections and wear commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: Document: 3 ½” H x 11 ⅜” W; Overall in frame: 11 ⅜” H x 15 ⅝” W.
