Description: GOOD to VERY GOOD CONDITION This sale is for a large size vintage hardback FIRST EDITION entitled “Miss Carter Came with Us,” by Helen Bradley, with numerous COLOUR illustrations of paintings by the author. It was published by Jonathan Cape, of Bedford Square, London, and is the 1973 FIRST EDITION (stated). This book is the sequel to “And Miss Carter Wore Pink.” In it, 73 year old Helen Bradley depicts life in Lancashire throughout the whole year of 1908. She says “My pictures are a love story of that gentle period.” The same loved characters of the previous book make their appearance and they all add up to a beguiling look back at an Edwardian childhood. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the Edwardian era. Many of the paintings have something of the style of Lowry's pictures of the industrial north. It includes scenes with factories and shops including a Suffragette march, a Church Whitsuntide Procession, the King (Edward VII) and Queen driving (in horse & carriage) through Manchester City centre, a Great Wash Day in Blackpool, Blackpool Pier, beach and railway station, a paddle steamer ship (King Orry) at Fleetwood, Christmas snow in Oldham, and many rural or semi-rural scenes. The book measures 11.75 inches x 10.5 inches and has 31 pages (including illustrations). The book is in good, neat condition for its age, with a similarly good original dust-jacket (not price-clipped; chips to the bottom of the spine), a previous owner’s gift inscription at the front, light foxing near the covers, and no other ink or pencil markings in the book (lining paper inside the rear cover is ruffled). The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. A wonderfully illustrated vintage FIRST EDITION.
