It is sized to accept a full-scale small bonsai. The glaze is an original “star crystal” glaze created by Zenaki Tsuchibuchi, the founder of Toan. The crystalline glaze has the property of forming crystals as the glaze melts and cools. The base is a cinnabar glaze, which gives beautiful colors unique to Kyo-yaki. Ordinary cinnabar glaze shows mottled crystals, but Senzan pots have star-shaped crystals of various sizes. The crystals appear in different ways on each piece, and no two pieces are alike.
