ARTIST INFO: HAYSEED DIXIE BIO/INFO-Hayseed Dixie is an American band which began in the Fall of 2000 with the release of their first album, A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC. The band performs a mixture of cover versions of hard rock songs and original compositions in a style that is a cross between bluegrass and rock music. The band's name is a play on the name AC/DC and was originally AC/Dixie, but they were forced to change it. Claiming to hail from the fictional Deer Lick Holler, Appalachia, the band has played nearly 1,000 live dates in 21 different countries since 2001. Hayseed Dixie is an American band formed in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2000. They claim to have created their own musical genre: “Rockgrass.” Hayseed Dixie delivers high-energy bluegrass renditions of classic rock songs you know and love. Hayseed Dixie's two previous efforts included tributes to mountain love music and AC/DC. The AC/DC tribute album has actually become somewhat of a Southern cultural favorite, selling about 100,000 copies, and even received praise from AC/DC itself, according to the band's Web site. To give a brief history of Hayseed Dixie, it must first be explained that the members also are known as the Kerosene Brothers. That's right: One band, two names. The band even takes things a step further by touring as the Kerosene Brothers, with Hayseed Dixie providing tour support. And, of course, the Kerosene Brothers have a new album out as well, "Choose Your Own Title." While the lineup of these bands varies a tad, they are primarily led by the trio of John Wheeler, Don Wayne Reno and Dale Reno. In Hayseed Dixie, those three musicians do the bulk of the work, while the Kerosene Brothers' lineup is bolstered by Ethan Pilzer on bass and Dave Harrison on drums. "Kiss My Grass" consists of 10 KISS covers done in a bluegrass vein. And while the idea of a hillbilly band covering AC/DC and KISS may seem really foreign to some, bluegrass pioneers the Dillards and even the legendary duo of Flatt and Scruggs found themselves covering Beatles and Byrds songs at the beginning of the psychedelic '60s. The amazing part is that some of the songs found on the KISS tribute actually work as stripped down bluegrass stompers. "Calling Dr. Love," "Cold Gin" and "Rock & Roll All Nite" all have similar major chord progressions that would work in any style, particularly country and bluegrass. As a band, these guys are tight, proficient players. It's just a shame the Nashville slickness is a common thread running the releases. Both albums should have been recorded on a back porch or in someone's kitchen with a 3 a.m. buzz of Pabst Blue Ribbon running through their nervous systems using a reel-to-reel eight-track tape machine. It would have surely added a welcome sense of raggedness and reality to the proceedings. One can only hope the band will go that route for future recordings Ultimately, music is truly what both of these releases are all about. And both albums played by the same band are truly competent releases, played by guys who truly know how to pick - and sound like they're having fun doing it. Both albums could probably provide a few chuckles at get-togethers and probably both sound great when played from a pickup truck or a Camaro with a bad muffler.
