Description: HARTFORD FIRE A group of local merchants gathered in a Hartford Connecticut inn in 1810 and with a working capital of just $15,000 founded the now famous Hartford Fire Insurance Company. The Company grow from an uncertain beginning to one of the strongest and most respected business organizations in the world. Their story was dramatically intertwined with America's history throughout the past two centuries. More than once the Hartford has paid losses in excess of its total worth, with Company Directors pledging their personal funds as security for loans. Other companies failed during these difficult times, but the Hartford hung on stubbornly. Vintage Hartford Insurance sign listed in “Signs of Insurance” book as number 171.5a on page 62. It is from the first half of the 1900's and is in good condition, with expected wear and signs of usage consistent with it's age. Back of the sign says: A "hart fording a stream" has been a part of the coat of arms or seal of the Hartford Fire Insurance Company since the corporation was established in 1810. There is a connection between the design and the seal of the city from which the Company took its name. Furthermore, the hart or stag, has long been recognized as symbolic of guardianship and watchfulness, In this use, it has long been identified with the printed literature of the “Hartford”. This is a really nice item and would make an excellent addition for any collector of signs, insurance company memorabilia, or a great gift for an insurance agent/broker, or a company employee or retiree. “The Monarch of the Glen” A Stag/Elk has long been associated with the name Hartford. An elk fording a stream was on the 16th century seal of the town of Hertford in England, from where the city of Hartford, Connecticut took its name and stag seal. Hartford Insurance Company of Connecticut, founded in 1810, also uses the Stag/Elk as their symbol to this date.The Hartford stag resembles one popularized in an 1851 painting by Sir Edwin Landseer called “The Monarch of the Glen.” Intended for display in the Peers' Refreshment Room of House of Commons of the United Kingdom, "Monarch of the Glen" caused a stir when MPs refused to pay Landseer’s price, claiming it was too steep and that they had not been properly consulted. Eventually, the painting was sold to a private collector. Nevertheless, once seen, few could forget the powerful image of such a magnificent animal.
