Description: Memoirs: Year of Decisions and Years of Trial and Hope Author: Truman, Harry Title: Memoirs: Year of Decisions and Years of Trial and Hope Publication: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1955 Edition: Special Edition Description: Hardcover. Fine. Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1955 & 1956, Garden City, 1955. Hardcover. First Edition. Two volumes. A special and obviously limited edition of this book bound in full blue cloth with gilt-lettered black spine labels, rather than the black cloth of the regular and Kansas City editions, and also larger in size than those editions (6" x 9-1/2"). Both volumes in fine condition, publisher's slipcases in very good condition. This edition appears to have been reserved for the author's use and presented by the President to those close to him. Each book is INSCRIBED warmly and at great length (the longest Truman inscription in a book we have ever seen) and SIGNED by the author to Leslie L. Biffle, who served twice as Secretary of the U. S. Senate. Evidently he played a key role in securing the Vice President nomination for Harry S. Truman in 1944. After FDR died, Truman came to rely on Biffle for information regarding goings-on in the Senate. There was a dedicated phone line between the two men's desks. During one press conference, Truman declared: "They don't make them any better than Biffle. And you can quote me on that." When Biffle died in 1966, Senator John L. McClellan announced it on the floor of the US Senate, mourning the loss of a "true patriot and one of America's finest citizens." In addition each book is housed in its original slipcase, each of which the President has also INSCRIBED and SIGNED to Biffle.
