Description: This is a small 5” William Hanzelka mixed metal and mineral specimen sculpture most likely from 1972. It does not have the Hanzelka ID plaque. This piece features a decrepit well house and branch mounted on a quartz crystal nodule on a black wood base. William Hanzelka worked as an assistant to the famous Carmel, CA metal sculptor Malcolm Moran at Moran Studios. He held this position for 10 years in the 1960’s - 70’s. While at Moran Studios, he learned the techniques of making the studio’s small naturalist mixed metal stone and metal tableaux. He created his own versions of these pieces throughout the 1970’s. He and his wife retried to Penn Vally, PA where he continued as a self-employed metal sculptor until his death in 2004.
