Description: This is a Cleveland Indians' "Uniform Agreement for the Assignment of a Player's Contract to or by a Major League Club" signed by Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (the General Manager of the Indians) and William Starr (the Owner of the San Diego Padres), dated March 27th, 1951). The referenced player was Harold "Hal" Naragon, then a twenty-two year old minor league catcher. His debut year with the Indians was the year of this document, 1951. This Assignment gave the Indians the right to recall Naragon from the Padres until 10/01/1951 with twenty-fours notice and a $500 recall fee paid to the Padres. Greenberg's and Starr's signatures were authenticated and graded by PSA/DNA, and each received a grade of 9 on PSA's 1-10 scale. Hank Greenberg had an illustrious career as a power hitter and baseball executive. He spent twelve years with the Detroit Tigers and was a five-time All Star, two-time World Series Champion, two-time AL MVP, a World War II veteran, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956. William Starr had a brief major league career with the Washington Senators (twelve appearances in 1935 and one in 1936, (a reprint of his photo from his playing days is included) but his enormous contributions to baseball came as an executive with the minor league San Diego Padres. In 1947, Hank Greenberg completed his major league career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was one of the few opposing players to publicly welcome Jackie Robinson into the major leagues. In William Starr he found a kindred spirit. Before the 1949 season, Starr's Padres became affiliated with the Cleveland Indians. The Padres were the first team to break the Pacific Coast League color barrier (Johnny Ritchey, Luke Easter, Artie Wilson, and Minnie Minoso); the Indians were the first American League to break the color barrier (Larry Doby). This document is on very thin paper and it has staple holes in the upper left margin. It has wonderful ink stamps in red and purple inks (see photographs) and the signatures of Mr. Greenberg and Mr. Starr are in blue ink. There are small folds along the top of the document.
