Description: The Canadian / North American Martyrs Single Decade Rosary Beautiful single decade rosary which has a 7/8" tall nickel silver medal of the 8 saints who were martyred during the early years of missionary work in eastern Canada and upstate New York. They are also called the North American martyrs. The back of the medal has an image of the Martyr's Shrine in Midland, Ontario. The 1-1/2" silver-toned St Benedict crucifix and the medal were made in Italy; the chaplet was handmade in the USA by me. The chaplet has eleven 8 mm beads. The Our Father bead is a smooth, round, genuine Amethyst gemstone. The ten Hail Mary beads are faceted, fire-polished Czech glass in a clear garnet red. Comes gift boxed and with a Canadian Martyrs prayer card and other related prayer cards, plus a How to Pray the Rosary pamphlet, carry pouch, Divine Mercy pamphlet, 15 Promises of Mary card, and a gift bag and tissue paper. The North American, or Canadian Martyrs is a group of 6 Jesuit priests and 2 laymen who were French missionaries to the Huron people in the 17th century. They had many successes but this was a violent time for the eastern native tribes who often looked upon the missionaries with distrust and superstition. Between 1642 and 1649 these 8 brave men were tortured and killed in locations in southern Ontario and upstate New York. Besides the major shrine in Ontario there is a shrine in Auriesville NY and various churches named after them in Canada and the United States. The martyrs are: St Jean De Brebeuf, St Rene Groupil, St Isaac Joques, St Jean de LaLande, St Antoine Daniel, St Charles Garnier, St Noel Chabanel and St Gabriel Lalemant. They were canonized as a group in 1930.
