Description: "Secret Garden" by Jory Loehr, Aged 12, Battle Creek, Mich. Framed By German Prisoner WWII Camp Custer, Mich./Now Fort Custer. One of my sources for eBay product is abandoned storage units. This item was in a unit that had other militaria, much of it from WWII. I have spent hours researching "Jory (George) Loehr" and various versions of the first and last name, with no success. If he is still living, he'd be in his 90's. I was similarly unable to find out any information regarding M.J Wank (?); again, using various names/spelling/dates/cities, etc. I found this online: On August 17, 1940, Camp Custer was designated Fort Custer and became a permanent military training base. During World War II, the post had an area of 16,005 Acres, and Quarters for 1,279 Officers and 27,553 Enlisted Personnel. More than 300,000 troops trained there, including the 5th Infantry Division (also known as the "Red Diamond Division") which was sent to Iceland in 1942 to protect the North Atlantic convoy routes, and in 1944 landed in France shortly after D-Day. The division saw much combat and sustained heavy casualties, particularly at the Battle of Metz. In 1943, Fort Custer was the activation point for many Army inductees from Chicago, Illinois and other parts of the mid-west. New troops received their equipment before being sent by train to Basic Training or other duty assignments. The primary purpose of the camp was to function as a Military Police Replacement Training Center. Fort Custer also served as a prisoner of war camp for 5,000 German soldiers until 1945.This is obviously a one-of-a-kind work of art, from an historically important time in our nation's history. I've owned it for several years and now offer it to an individual who can truly appreciate and display this unique piece of art.The art size is approximately 16 1/2" x 13 3/4", with an overall size of 23 1/4 x 20 1/2" x 1 3/4", and it weighs 8 pounds, 12 ounces.We attempt to be as accurate as possible in our listings, and research each item as best we can prior to listing.
