Description: Hampton & Branchville 44 4-6-0 Miley SC 7-8-1966 by Tom Lawson 44 4-6-0 Baldwin 59751 10/1926 19x26 51 142000 New. The 44 operated for the H&B for more than three decades before it was retired in 1959. It was sold in June 1969 to Charleston, South Carolina's chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Operated in the Southern Railway freight yard for years, the 44 was sold to the SC Railroad Museum in June 1991 where it went on static display at Winsboro. Beginning in 2009, the Project 44 Committee began raising funds to restore the 44 to operated on the Rockton, Rion & Western. An assessment of the 44's condition turned up the welcome news that the engine was in remarkably good condition. The Hampton & Branchville Railroad was incorporated in South Carolina on December 16, 1891. The company was authorized to construct a railroad from some point on the Savannah River below Hamburg through Hampton Court House and the counties of Hampton, Colleton and Orangeburg, and to extend the line at anytime to Sumter, SC, and to connect with any railroad in SC or GA, thereby making a short line to Jacksonville, FL. The company was controlled by William H. Mauldin, one of the incorporators, and later by his heirs. The company also operated a sawmill at Hampton, SC. By 1928 the Mauldin heirs had sold out to J. C. Lightsey. Prior to incorporation, about 6 miles of 36" gauge logging railroad, extending easterly from Hampton, had been contructed in 1890 by the firm of Mauldin & Sons, which operated a pine and hardwood sawmill at Hampton Courthouse. By 1895 the line had been completed from Hampton to Mauldinton, SC, 20 miles, with a branch from Mauldinton to Cones, SC, 3 miles for a total of 23 miles. By January 1901, the line extended form Hampton to a connection with the Atlantic Coast Line at Hampton & Branchville Junction, 16 miles. In February 1909 an extension of about 8 miles from H. & B. Jct., to Smoaks was completed. The railroad was constructed for logging purposes. By 1928 the length of the railroad stood at 49 miles. The line was in southwestern part of South Carolina and extended from Hampton to Smoaks, SC, 24.243 miles. It connected at Hampton with the Charleston & Western Carolina and with the Atlantic Coast Line at Hampton & Branchville Junction. In October 1925, the road was authorized to extend its line to Cottageville, SC, 48 miles from Hampton. Passenger service was discontinued in 1957.
