HAMPSHIRE POTTERY, CUCUMBER MATTE GREEN PLANTER, SCROLL PATTERN, ARTS & CRAFTS~~

Description: For auction is a wonderful and early form made by The Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire. The form is a low profile planter with an embossed arts & crafts design. The planter is done in Hampshire Pottery's famous matte cucumber green glaze. This planter is a nice cabinet size as it measures 5" in diameter and is 1 1/2" tall. The bottom foot measures 4 11/16" in diameter. The vase has a squat form with a pattern of an incised scroll pattern that runs along the center outside walls of the vase. This pattern circles the entire vase. The vase displays a deep cucumber green glaze that is quite uniform throughout. The inside or well of the planter has a the same matte green glaze as the outside. The bottom of the vase shows the signature ground down outer bottom ring with the white glaze on the underside bottom. The vase is considered to be in excellent condition, free of nicks, chips, dings and hairlines. The vase has a lot of firing lines in the waterproofing white clay. This is quite common with Hampshire Pottery pieces. The vase is signed on the bottom with the raised relief 48/1. There is no other signature mark but this is Hampshire Pottery's mold number for this style of planter. Since this is lacking both the M in a circle mark and Hampshire or Hampshire Pottery this leads me to believe that it was made before Cadmon Robertson's tenure with Hampshire Pottery. The "M" in a circle mark was used to honor Cadmon Robertson's wife "Emoretta". She was the sister of the founder, James Scollay Taft. Cadmon Robertson was the head chemist for the glazes and ran Hampshire Pottery from 1904-1914. This "M" in a circle mark was used during his tenure, subsequently this piece was made before then, l would say circa 1898-1903. Hampshire Pottery started producing matte glazes in 1891. This was 7 years earlier than their main competitor "Grueby Faience" of Boston, Mass. Hampshire Pottery resembles the style of Grueby but were much more affordable as they were mold made pieces as opposed to hand thrown. I want to point out that this is not a common shape number to find in Hampshire Pottery. I have had hundreds through my 46+ years as a dealer and collector. This is only the third time I have ever owned this form number. This will make a wonderful addition to any matte pottery collection of art pottery and would look great on that Stickley Mission arts and crafts bookcase. This could also be used as a pin or small dresser tray. PLEASE READ BELOW I want to apologize for slowing down my shipping time. Ebay forced me into managed payments in July 2020. I used to get my money in 24 hours. I now get it in 3-4 business days. I was told it would be better for me and my fees would go down. This has been the opposite as my fees have actually increased and now it takes longer for me to receive the payments. Because of this slowdown I will not ship until the payment has made it into my bank account. No store lets you out of the building with the merchandise unless it is paid for. They are also now charging all sellers a commission of 12.35% on sales tax. Pay Pal used to charge 2.9% payment processing fee but Ebay has changed this to 12.35%. This is an increase of 9.45% on the sales tax portion. They are now making a profit on the sales tax and treating it as a sale which in my eyes is wrong!! They did the same on the shipping charges several years ago. They use to not charge anything and now they are charging 12.35% commission on shipping as well. This has raised the cost to ship items to you, the buyer and this is factored into my shipping charges. If you feel what Ebay is doing is wrong or you don't agree them please contact Ebay and voice your opinion. Maybe if enough of you do this, they will change their policy.
