Description: Civil War Sutler Token for Henry Rice, Sutler for McClernands Brigade Illinois VolunteersSutler IL-MB-5B (brass) R-7 NGC UNC Details - Attractive token with only light wipe marks on its surfacesMr. Rice obtained sutler tokens from Cincinnati token maker John Stanton. The tokens were issued in four denominations: 17mm 5-cent tokens, 19mm 10-cent tokens, 22mm 25-cent tokens, and 25mm 50-cent tokens. All four varieties were struck on brass planchets and all varieties are rare. This is an attractive uncirculated specimen of the 5-cent token. It is well struck with subdued brass color. Very fine wipe marks are present in the fields. The NGC assessment of this token as "cleaned" seems overly harsh as many tokens certified by NGC with high uncirculated grades can be found with similar wipe marks in the fields.John Alexander McClernand was a lawyer and politician serving in the House of Representatives from Illinois prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. He was also a close friend and political ally of President Lincoln. In 1861, he was commissioned as a Union General and given permission to recruit volunteers that would contribute in the fight to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi.
