A manor house was built there in the 1700s, and it became a hospital during World War One and a home for evacuated children during World War Two. Post-war, the property was sold and the new owner had plans to turn it into a hotel but the plans fell through. It became derelict, the roof collapsed during the 1960s, and finally it was damaged by fire during the filming of a TV movie.
