Description: This is one of the best collections of American Marches around, giving you a wide variety of Marches, from James Hewitt's "The Battle of Trenton" (techinically not a march, but a "battle" piece, much like "Wellington's Victory" by Beethoven) on through a variety of greats like the Second Connecticut Regimental March, Getty Huffine's "Them Basses". Sousa is modestly represented, so that if you are one to get annoyed with over-doses of Sousa, you will find yourself relieved that he is not dominant on this album. Each march is done to the best perfection, and if you are used to a slower Stars and Stripes (don't get scared by the fact that it is on here!), you will be happy to know that this one is brisker, less pompous, without sacrificing any of the grandeur.Probably most enjoyable for starting off is the first march: "The Footlifter" by Henry Fillmore. This delightful march will have you trying to stamp to it. Please do not try this while driving.Notable: Joplin's piano march "Combination March" transcribed for band, the two marches by Charles Ives, and Gilmore's "The Norwich Cadets". Also "Purple Carnival" by Harry L. Alford (not to be confused with British Kenneth J. Alford, also a great march composer).
