Description: You are bidding on a 3 page typed/signed letter dated November 27, 1971 from Brazilian pianist, GUIOMAR NOVAES (1895-1979) re Russian pianist, ALEXANDER BOROVSKY (1889-1968). "It was a pleasure to receive your good letter of July 5, which I finally answer now, hoping you did understand this delay through note we have sent you a few days ago. The quotation from Borovsky's memoirs mentions true facts which I recall mixed feelings. The joy of sharing happy moments with good colleagues by the time my dear husband was alive, the gloom of not being able to bring them to life again. We used to welcome home a great many of musicians, mostly American native ones (or by adoption) and entertain them with talks, informal music sessions and sight-seeings to enable an acquaintance with our people and tradition. Alexander Borovsky was one of them. He was a great artist and great soul nourishing his meaning from a deep contact with Bach. There we could find the man in his territory. Once in Rio de Janeiro he presented a full version of the "Well-Tempered Clavier" in a series of recitals which came to be a real success. Incidentally, as far as I know that was the first complete performance of the masterpiece featured in Rio de Janeiro, though unfortunately I have no information of exactly when the event took place. He also played in S. Saulo in the early forties. On that occasion he used one of my pianos which he chose himself at my home. While he stayed in Rio he came as a guest to a few dinners at home of my friend Mrs. Ignez Correa D'Araujo (B.A. - University of Columbia - N. York), Head of the Brazilian Institute of Citizenship. One of the most interesting nights was when he met the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, who was then in his climax of creativity and impressing deeply his countrymen as well as the foreign critics. Borowsky seemed to be impressed upon that strong personality who must have given him quite a show. I wish I had further data to give you and if my dear friend were alive I probably would have it however this is all I can offer at the moment. Thank you for your understanding and for having sent me the words Borowsky honored me with. As to Xenia Prochorowa I have no information about this name doesn't sound familiar to me. Wishing you all success in your work, may you receive my greetings.Sincerely yours,(signed) Guiomar Novaes Pinto with envelope
