I sculpted the model in zbrush, and made a mold from the 3d printed prototype. You’re getting a resin cast from that mold. 1/24 scale, 88 mm long-see picture with dollar bill for scale. Perfect for model display for schools, animal collections or doramas. A bargain at this price! As always I do my best to clean up the model before sending it. There may be some flash and tiny trapped air bubbles on the belly areas. Most of this is unnoticed. Otherwise flash can be trimmed and bubbles can be fixed with a little putty. The 3d printing technology is always changing, better materials and much, much better detail. One 3d company is offering a material that captures the detail perfectly and has striations that are very hard to notice. The only problem is these printed “prototypes” are very expensive. I had to find a way to reproduce these models, and the conclusion is to cast them in resin. Casting the 3d prints in resin will keep up with demand and capture the detail customers want. I can cast more models a day, but they will be still limited—the silicone mold doesn’t last long! I will have to make a new mold when the old wears out. I will try to cast in a gray color, the only trouble is it’s hard to keep the same shade. The castings are smooth and glossy. There is a little “flash” and some of the seams show, otherwise the castings are very good and much better than most plastic toys. There may be some small air bubbles that can be repaired with a little putty. To extend the mold life I will use a “mold release”. As you know it's hard to find good models of this subject and if this sells well I'll be posting many more different subjects. Keep coming back and see what's new! For painting castings. I use just plain acrylic artist paint-the stuff you can get at Walmart is fine. Priming is alright, I tried just painting onto the bare resin and that worked with acrylic paint. Otherwise the model looks great without paint. I tell my customers to study the Schleich and similar toys on how to paint your model. The colors on these toys are very good in matching the living animal. When I paint a 3d animal I usually paint the first layer the “local” color of the animal. Local color for the elephant is the“dark grey” over the whole body. Local color for a brown bear is brown, a yellow bird is yellow and so on. After the local color is dry I wash over a darker shade of the local color were there would be shadows and details. (wash is using more thinner with the paint, more water with acrylic) After the wash is dry I dry brush a little lighter shade of the local color over the top of the model and top of the details. Dry brush is just having a little paint on the brush and quickly rubbing over model. Don’t overdo the dry brushing you can get carried away. Now the model will start looking realistic. Finish up by doing the details-pink for the mouth, white for tusks and teeth and for the eyes I advise leaving out the “whites” around the eyeball. Just paint the eyes a dark shade, since they are always in shadow. When you view a small model the closest you usually look is like 8 inches or a foot away. At that distance you would never see tiny painted details. At a distance an illusion of reality is created-especially under the correct lighting. Please Read! FREE shipping in the USA!
