Born in Saint Charles, IL, Amenoff studied at Beloit College in Wisconsin and moved to Boson in 1971, where he first began exhibiting his work. He went on to move to New York 1979, and was included in both the 1981 and 1985 Whitney Museum Biennales. His work has been associated with peers Terry Winters, Bill Jensen, and Katherine Porter, painters who were also working in a kind of organic-based abstraction.Amenoff’s work has been exhibited extensively, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the DeCordova Museum in Massachusetts, James Corcoran Gallery in California, and the Tampa Museum of Art in Florida, among many others. In total, he has had over 50 solo exhibitions around the world. Today is work is collected by over 30 institutions, including the Whitney Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He is the recipient of the John Solomon Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts, and the Tiffany Foundations, as well as numerous other awards. He has also taught extensively, notably at Columbia University since 1994, where he helped found the MFA program.Amenoff lives and works in New York, NY and Ulster County, NY.
