Musicalia Danubiana is a series of volumes of source publications appearing under the auspices of the Institute for Musicology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Volume I is a facsimile edition of one of the major sources for the Gregorian tradition in Hungary. It bears the title Missale Notatum Strigoniense ante 1341. The manuscript contains the liturgical order and melodic plainsong variants from Esztergom, reflecting the usages in the country's highest ranking ecclesiastical centre. In all probability the manuscript was also notated in Esztergom, in a classical variant of the specific Hungarian notation. However, from the late 14th century the Missale was in use in Pozsony (Bratislava, Pressburg), where it is preserved today in the Archiv Mesta. Apart from one lengthy section which has been lost, the source contains the chants for the whole ecclesiastic year, as well as the sequences, Ordinaries of the mass and a few supplementary pieces. The introductory study to the facsimile edition is about 100 pages long. It covers the history of the codex and liturgical, musical and paleographic analyses of it, and is copiously indexed. The volume has been preparedin conjunction with the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Musicological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences by editors Janka Szendrei and Richard Rybaria, who also wrote the introductory study.
