Description: Presented is a wonderful Gorham coin silver sugar basket. This piece dates to around 1860. The basket has lovely machine turning around the side, surrounding two cartouches. One cartouche is engraved 'A. Brown' above the date 'Nov. 16th 1864.' We were told this is the Brown family associated with Brown University of Rhode Island. The cartouche on the other side is blank and could easily be engraved with a monogram or inscription of your choice. The interior of the basket has a gold wash. This piece is in excellent overall condition. The details of the machine turnings and engravings are nice and crisp. There are some very minor dings visible in the interior, but these do not show on the exterior. There are no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The underside of the piece is stamped 'coin' and with the maker's mark for Gorham. The basket is about 4 1/8 inches tall. This piece weighs 198 grams or 7.0 regular ounces.
