Description: I have for sale a British medal that commemorates the 1859 Handel Centenary Festival that was held at the Crystal Palace in London. The medal is bronze, it is two inches in diameter and in a high grade circulated condition. On the obverse it shows a raised bust of GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL with his name. On the reverse inside a wreath it reads CENTENARY - COMMEMORATION - CRYSTAL PALACE - MDCCCLIX. Engraved on the rim it reads W. PEACOCK, ESQ. COMMITTEE S.H.S. This medal is listed in the British Commemorative Medals by Christopher Eimer as #1527. From the Eimer book it reads, Over 25,000 people attended the Festival, which was organized by the Sacred Harmonie Society. It was held over four days during which various pieces of Handel were played and bronze medals presented to performers. The medal looks better than the pictures.
