GD 50 !!! And, to honor this Landmark ! Rock & Roll Achievement - Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino originally released a " 30-Years ! " Box Set - to rightfully ' Commemorate ' " '65 " ! And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream ! " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for " This ! " 30 Trips " 1978 " 3-CD Set selection offered here ... just plain & simple " Super-Duper !! " G.D. Spring Tour '78 Show release ! - and yeah ... " Finally ! " straight-from the ' Vault ! '. And now ... for just a little ' History ' here for you - of the " Taper-Kind ! ". As This ! Show was basically a Spring Tour '78 ( or just 1978 Touring-Year in general ) that pretty-much " Nobody ! " had. And trust me - as this really ' missing ' Dead Show was a thorn in the side that continued throughout the Late-'80's, '90's & 2000's ! - at least to my pretty knowledgeable-knowledge of all these kinds of " Vital " Live-Dead info ( Ha ! ). But, no joke ... as I actually ' passed ' on acquiring this Show ' numerous/multiple ' times through the years & decades - as it was one of ' Those-Shows ' which no matter " How-Hot " like No-One ! had a clean copy. I mean to put it square here ... I don't think I " Ever " caught a glimpse of this 5/14/78 Providence Show on " Any " Tapers List - as over a " B " or maybe " B+ " ? - and, if I did ... I can assure you that the ' truth ' here was unfortunately being stretched just a little bit. As all of This-Show ! that anyone had ( in reasonable circulation - for seriously " Diehard " Dead-Fans ) was a like " C+ / B- " Audience recording that was originally also ' Broadcast ' from a New Bedford, MA " Dead Dead Hour ". And, because like no-one had it - and also apparently ... no one who did actually record it themselves managed to get a good/respectable recording ... This-Show just pretty much got the " Towel Thrown In " and yeah ... So-Sadly ! But then one day ... I actually took the time to really " Listen " to the ' Let It Grow ' on-here !?! And from-there ... That-Point ! ... I was on a " Mission ! ". And, I guess it paid off ( " kinda ? " ) - since I was able to secure the cleanest low-gen recording ( of the Radio Broadcast ) which someone actually recorded with " All " of there Might ! - and then also ... Equalized & essentially " Remastered ". But, with this said - it was still an " Aud. " recording - and by no-means was one of " Those ! " Aud. Recordings that arguably might even out-deliver the Soundboard itself !?! Point being ... it was " Well-Listenable " and this led me then beyond the like 17-Minute ! " Smoker !! " of Let It Grow ! And then ... I also saw the Respect ! that ' this ' Samson ! deserved ( clocking in at like 10-minutes ). And ... this led to the Beauty ! of this particular ' Estimated > Eyes ! '. Which, then really put the " Spotlight ! " on the " Not Fade Away !!! " - or, as I should more properly say ... the " Killer !! " NFA > GDTRFB !!! The Band played a similar " Heater ! " of a Show at the Philly Spectrum just the night before ( on 5/13/78 ), and then after this 5/14/78 Providence Civic ! Show - they had a day-off before taking on the 2-Show stand in Chicago at the ' Uptown '. So ... this really is just one of those nights ' Late ' in this April > May '78 Spring Tour - where they just made the call to ' cut-loose ' and really-really let the " Music Play The Band ! ". So yes indeed ... as there are really Two !! " Reasons " to have This " Awesomely-Powerfully ! " 1978 Grateful Dead ' Providence ' Show ... with one being ' Historic ' essentially - since for so-many-years it was simply ' not ' to be found - in clean & respectable sound-quality. And, the other-reason is that is also ' Clearly ! ' stands on its-own as being one of the Most " On ! " Shows of the ' Entire ' 1978 Touring-Year of the Good Ol' Late-'70's ! Era Grateful Dead. Who, in fact were just about to start their Studio Recording of " Shakedown Street ! " ( with Lowell George ! ) just about 3-Months after This-Show ! So, if you ' hear-me there ' - as let's just say ... " Funky ! When-Necessary !! " - Ha ! And, last too - but most definitely ' not-least ' ... as " This ! " Show is a Fine ( and almost ' Pinnacle ' example ) as to why " 1978 " Deserves-Love !! As This-Show " Earns-It " - and really Stands-Tall in bucking the sort of ' common-notion ' ( more-than common notion ! ) that '78 Live-Dead is just kind of like say the " Unwanted Stepchild ? " - in direct comparison to the Band's Clear-Achievements in say ... '77 - '76 - '79 - '80 ? They just can achieve a like ( what I like to call ) almost " Droning-Tone-Command " ( and even ' at ' Low-Tempo ! ) which they certainly didn't do ( or really even go-for in say '76 ? ) - and, by '79 & '80 for the most-part ... it was onto the " Brent-Era ". But, just as a " Rule-Of-Thumb " as I have always liked to say ... don't just scoot by, over, or under '78 Live-Dead ! It's just that sometime on the ' Hunt ' ... " You've Just Got To Poke-Around !!
