And, to honor this Landmark ! Rock & Roll Achievement - Grateful Dead Productions / Rhino released a Limited Edition Box Set ( of 6,500 units ) - to rightfully ' Commemorate ' " '65 "! And in unprecedented ( & So-Cool ! ) fashion ... this Monster Box Set included Thirty ( 30 ) Grateful Dead Shows on Thirty ( 30 ) CD Sets ( 80-CD's in total ) - and, each CD Set represents the sequential years of the Band's 30-Year development ... from 1966 to 1995 ! Obviously, this was a " Deadheads Dream " type Box Set - for the Beyond-Special occasion ... of 50-Years Upon Our Heads ! Fantastic, to say the least ... Wow !!! And, for the 30 Trips " 1969 " 2-CD Set selection offered here ... Whoa ?!!!! " Night 2 !! " at the " Dream Bowl !!! " in Vallejo !?!?! What an Unbelievable ! ' Call ' from inside ' The Vault !!! '. I mean People ... the Two ( 2 ) '69 Dream Bowl Shows were both ! serious Dead Fan " Life-Changers " for any Good Deadhead worth their weight in ' Dead-Tape s' way-back in the Late-'80's/Early'90's Era - which, as I recall was right around the time that they first surfaced ... or, you know - at least to my own knowledge. And that was the time for sure, that they first started circulating around my taping circle of Dead Fan Friends ! The Band played 2-Huge !! Shows at the Good Ol' " Dream Bowl " on 2/21/69 & 2/22/69 - and as I recall ( quite-well ) ... the 2/21/69 Show got a little more ' hype ' by Tapers & Tape Collectors - for two main reasons ... 1st being the Massive ! Dark Star - and the 2nd being... the overall ' quality ' of the two nights of tape, in comparison. So ... this is really the initial reason why I feel this 2/22/69 release call is a Solid ! one. Because really, what happens here - is it genuinely puts this 2/22/69 Show on the same top-shelf as the 2/21/69 Show. The 2/21/69 Show got Big-Time ! props because of it's " Dark Star ", mainly - as I remember some even putting it up there towards the 2/13/70 Dark Star scale. But, honestly ... with this 2/22/69 pro-release now officially being unleashed ?! It is seriously giving the 2/21/69 version a run for it's money ! - and when you also add the Pigpen Fired & Fueled ' Lovelight ' ?!? = " The-Heat !!! ". And ... with all seriousness - it might even take a tiny ' lead ' if you really listen to the cohesive & creative nature of what ' surrounds ' this Dark Star ! Firstly, Dark Star comes out of an impressive ( & really ' noteworthy ' ) Mountains Of The Moon ( highlighted by flawlessly-played & excellently-recorded Acoustic finger-picking by Jerry ! ) - which, in this case indeed helps even more ... as this Dark Star is initially given it's newest life. And, more directly to the point ... the Cryptical Envelopment ' following ' Dark Star and birthing the Other One - is simply Amazing ! " Prime-Era '69 Live-Dead ! " In-Action ! And, that's not even it ... as the Other One then re-enters Cryptical leading up to one of the Hottest ! Death Don't Have No Mercy versions of all of 1969 ! I mean Fans ?!? -- this " Death Don't " is Up-There !! And yes ... I know, this is a tall order for sure - but, it's really-really ' there ' in the Garcia '69 Hot-Zone ! And then ... out of Doin' That Rag comes another ! of the Hottest ! versions of St. Stephen > Eleven Jam ! > Lovelight that the Band pretty much ever-played. I know, an even taller order ( obviously ... ), but the only way really to confirm this claim is with the Headphones !! ( naturally ... ). And, I must openly admit ... when I saw that " Dream Bowl " was indeed going to grace the highly-competitive " 1969 " spot in this 30-Trips Box ? - I just assumed that it was the 2/21/69 Show, in my initial glance. And then, once reading the fine-print ( duh ... ) - I saw that it wasn't 2/21/69 ... and it actually-was 2/22/69 ?!! So, bummed for a split second - I just decided to instantly revert back to an ' open-mind ' ... Hah ! And, let me tell you - I'm so incredibly Grateful ! that I did. I hadn't listened to either of these Shows for close to maybe 3-years ? - prior to finding out what would be released inside 30-Trips. And, it was a great call to go about it that way, for me. Honestly, as in my own personal opinion ... the ' Mastering ' job done on this set is one that is not only ' noteworthy ' - but, it's even worth some kind of " Award ! ". Maybe even like a Christmas Story type ' Major-Award ! ' ( Ha ! ). Nonetheless, just ... " Completely-Stellar !! ". Garcia's grip on the frets has some serious edge - attitude - attack - both consistently & constantly ! all-throughout this 2/22/69 Show - with that distinct Gibby ' Raunch ! '. With the only really-minor flubs barely audible when he is really-really-Attacking ! in say Page-like fashion - with all of his might, heart & soul. So, you know ... if there is a time to take a little bit of borderline-slop in Rock & Roll - I mean that is right where you want it ... in wheelhouse, or maybe better said - in the " Dream Bowl " Boiler Room !! It should be appropriately noted too, that fret-wise ? ... Phil ! is on one serious mission throughout this entire 2/22/69 Vallejo Show ! - just like he also was on 2/21/69 ! Dang ... I mean I don't know ? I guess the 1969 Grateful Dead were just Real-Psyched ! to Rock-Out !! ( Heavy & Hard ! ) on the " Dream Bowl !!! ". And yeah ... that they did. Just how many People are still left with us here today that were fortunate enough to see This-One ! ' Live ' ? - I mean ... hopefully All-Of-Them !! With that being a " Massive !
