Thanks! HistoryAlthough the trade name is Grape Agate, these are actually Botryoidal Purple Chalcedony. Grape Agates are composed of tiny to small spheres of Chalcedony (rather than a true Agate) naturally bonded to one another. Agate got its name from the Achates River in Greece. Agate is a variety of chalcedony which is a microcrystalline quartz.Grape Agate is the name given to a purple, botryoidal form of Chalcedony found in the Batu Manakarra mining district on the Sulawesi Island of Indonesia. It forms in clusters that often resemble bunches of small grapes, and colors can range from pale to deep purple to green. Some specimens can be quite sparkly due to minute quartz crystal growing on the spheres. A botryoidal texture or mineral habit is one in which the mineral has a globular external form resembling a bunch of grapes as derived from the Greek. Each sphere (grape) in a botryoidal mineral is smaller than that of a retiform mineral, and much smaller than that of a mammillary mineral. Botryoidal minerals form when many nearby nuclei, specks of sand, dust, or other particles, are present. Layers of mineral material are deposited radially around the nuclei. As more material is deposited, the spheres grow larger and eventually overlap with those that are nearby. These nearby spheres are then fused together to form the botryoidal cluster. Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of quartz and morganite. These are both silica minerals, but they differ in that quartz has a trigonal crystal structure, while morganite is monoclinic. Chalcedony's standard chemical structure (based on the chemical structure of quartz) is SiO2 (silicon dioxide). Chalcedony has a waxy luster, and may be semitransparent or translucent.
