ABOUT THE ARTIST: Among the most widely known artists to come from the Latin American art movement, the recurring theme of Graciela Rodo Boulanger's compositions is the innocence and simplicity of children exuberant in their joyous playful worlds of fantasy, performance and exploration. Her unique depictions of her subjects has become her calling card. Inspired by her Bolivian roots, her highly stylized approach and sensibilities as an experimenter and colorist has won her acclaim as a respected and prolific Latin American artist. Her work has been widely exhibited and collected in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America. Another common theme in Boulanger’s work is depictions of her figures participating in team sports, a subject matter that offers her a different lens in which to reimagine the human experience. In “Tennis” we are, again, met with an earthy color palette and a contrast of natural curves and lines with more rigid geometric patterns. The five female figures—each one made unique in their expression, skin tone and stature—huddle close together at the net as though posed for a team photograph, seems to depict the emotional resonance of camaraderie and importance of team morale over the tension of competition. The vertical and horizontal axis that slices through the image further enhances the idea of this etching as a portrait of a picture, one that—perhaps—has been folded up and forgotten for a time long ago.
