It is located about three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Gornergrat is located between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier and offers views of more than 20 four-thousanders, including Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and the Liskamm. The Gornergratbahn runs from Zermatt (1620 m above sea level) M.) via Riffelalp (2222 m above sea level). M.) and Riffelberg (2600 m above sea level). M.) on the Gornergrat and overcomes a height difference of almost 1500 meters. At the terminus (3089 m above sea level) M.) on the southwestern tip of the ridge is the Kulmhotel, which is the highest mountain hotel in Switzerland. The Gornergrat ski area is connected to the Klein Matterhorn ski area with a new gondola lift that runs from Furi to the Riffelberg. From 1958 to 2007, the Zermatt Stockhorn could be reached from the Gornergrat with a aerial tramway that led over the Hohtälli. Tourism began to develop as early as the 1870s. The former Hotel Belvédère opened in 1896. The Gornergratbahn was opened in 1898 and is the first fully electrified cog railway in Switzerland. As a result, the flow of tourists increased rapidly. Zermatt very quickly recognized the importance of the Gornergrat as a tourist destination. That's why they built the Kulmhotel from 1897 to 1907, which is still there today. In 1904 Bruno Wehrli and his brothers produced what was then the largest landscape photograph in the world for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. This showed a panorama of the Gornergrat and was 20.50 meters long and 2.25 meters high. The photographs were exposed on 18 cm X 24 cm plates and copied onto silver bromide paper. The plates and silver bromide paper were made by "JH Smith & Co." made from Zurich.[1] Due to various dangers, only the summer operation of the Gornergratbahn was initially possible. In 1928, the railway ran up to the Riffelalp in winter for the first time, which made the first winter sports season in Zermatt possible. Gradually, the entire route was made winter-proof, so that in 1942 it was possible to travel to the terminus on the Gornergrat in winter for the first time. Just eight years later, the operating frequency was higher in winter than in summer. Due to the constantly growing number of visitors, the railway was also expanded. Today, the journey time to the Gornergrat is only 33 minutes. The Monte Rosa is a vast mountain massif in the Valais Alps, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. Its main summit, the Dufourspitze, is 4634 m above sea level. M. the highest point in Switzerland and also in the entire German-speaking area. The border peak at 4618 m (south of the 4515 m high Silbersattel) is the highest peak of Monte Rosa in Italy. About two thirds of Monte Rosa belongs to Italy and about one third to Switzerland. From Piedmont, Valle Anzasca and Valle Sesia reach up to the east foot of the massif. The 2200 or The 1500 m high east walls of Monte Rosa form the end of the valley here - in the case of the Anzasca Valley the Macugnaga Wall and in the case of the Valle Sesia the Sesia Wall (Parete Valsesiana). From the south, from the Aosta Valley, the valley of Gressoney (Lystal) extends to the southwestern edge of Monte Rosa, which is most easily accessible here via the Lis glacier. In the northwest, from Zermatt at the beginning of the Mattertal in Valais, the valleys of the Gornergletscher and the rugged Grenzgletscher lead up to the summit region of Monte Rosa. The commonly named peaks over 3950 m in the Monte Rosa massif are: Dufourspitze (4634 m) Dunantspitze, formerly Ostspitze (4632 m) Grenzgipfel (4618 m) Nordend (4609 m) Signalkuppe (4554 m) Zumsteinspitze (4563 m) Parrotspitze ( 4432 m) Ludwigshöhe (4341 m) Schwarzhorn (4322 m) Vincent Pyramid (4215 m) Balmenhorn (4167 m) Punta Giordani (4046 m) Jägerhorn (3970 m)[1] The Dunantspitze is a secondary peak of the Dufourspitze. The border summit does not meet the summit criterion, but is the highest point in the Monte Rosa massif that lies on Italian soil. The peaks of Monte Rosa are among the highest in the Alps. Only the Mont Blanc massif is even higher, but due to the greater glaciation it has fewer named peaks over 4500 m and does not take up any more area in comparison. The Monte Rosa dominates the whole of western Upper Italy and therefore has its name. This does not come from the coloring of the glaciers in the morning and evening light, but from the word rouese, which means “glacier” in the Franco-Provençal patois of the Aosta Valley. From Switzerland, on the other hand, Monte Rosa is mainly visible from Ticino and from the heights above Zermatt. Some Italians still count the Liskamm as part of Monte Rosa, since it seems less separated from the massif from the south-east than from the north-west. The first documented high-altitude tour in the high region of Monte Rosa was undertaken by Walsers from Gressoney in 1778, 1779 and 1780 in search of the "lost valley" (verlorus Täli) described in their treasure of legends. They reached the uppermost Lis glacier (discovery rock / Roccia della Scoperta, 4178 m). The Punta Giordani closest to the valleys of Gressoney and Alagna was climbed first by Pietro Giordani in 1801. This was followed by the Vincent pyramid by, among others, its namesake Johann Nikolaus Vincent on 5. August 1819 and the Zumsteinspitze by, among others, Joseph and Johann Niklaus Vincent, Joseph Zumstein, Molinatti and Castel on August 1. August 1820, both over the Lis Glacier. The other high peaks followed later: after three unsuccessful attempts, the pastor of Alagna, with Giovanni Gnifetti, Giuseppe Farinetti, Cristoforo Ferraris, Cristoforo Grober, the Giovanni brothers, Giacobbe Giordani, and two porters reached the Signalkuppe. The ascent of the Dufourspitze took place from the Swiss side on January 1st. August 1855 by Charles Hudson, John Birbeck and Christopher and James G. Smyth with Ulrich Lauener and Matthäus and Johannes Zumtaugwald. The north end followed on the 26th. August 1861, the Parrotspitze on 16. August 1863. In 1893 the Club Alpino Italiano built the Capanna regina Margherita on the Signalkuppe. For mountaineers (and for steep face skiers), Monte Rosa is particularly interesting because of its almost 2000 m high and 10 km long east face.[3] The easily accessible high peaks between Zumsteinspitze and Ludwigshöhe are overcrowded at times when the weather is good. The usual access today, as far as the central and southern peaks are concerned, is from the Passo dei Salati (2936 m) at the southern end of the massif. There is a cable car from Alagna in the far end of Valle Sesia and a lift from Gressoney. When the ski area is open in winter, you can currently take the cable car up to Punta Indren in comfort - this option is often used by freeride skiers and ski mountaineers as a welcome aid to the ascent on the way to the Gnifetti Hut (or Mantova Hut). From the Passo dei Salati, the ascent leads over the Stolemberg, which is secured with fixed ropes, to the Lys Glacier, which can also be reached directly from Gressoney, which is more strenuous. The two northern peaks, Nordend and Dufourspitze, are mainly approached from Zermatt via the Monte Rosa Hut, which can be reached from the Rotenboden station of the Gornergratbahn.
