Description: This is an original intact January 1906 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, in a smaller format (6.75" X 10") than its later issues. Full of interesting information on life in early post-Victorian times and perfect for an enthusiast of this era, the magazine features dozens of ads, many of them with attractive photos and/or illustrations, along with engaging articles and some short fiction stories--a staple of the pre-radio era. Topics in the articles are fire safety, teaching letter-writing to children, Gobelin tapestries, a master gardener's achievements with flowers, making "home-like rooms" in attics and basements, piano maintenance, gas & electric lighting, involving children in theater, women working outside the home in the presence of philandering men, legal matters for brides, a case study inside a boarding house, children's diversions, a case study of a "successful wife-planned cottage," making book covers, woman's waging war on tuberculosis, little gardens indoors, some current fashions and patterns, and household hints in the "The Table" and "Discoveries" features. Beautiful ads abound in this issue. Illustrated full-page ads can be found for Cream of Wheat, Sapolio soap, Pears' soap, Dennison's crepe paper, Campbell's soup, Victor Talking Machine Co., National Cloak and Suit Company, Standard lavatory products, Fels-Naptha soap, Patrol fire extinguishers, Pettijohn's Breakfast Food, Singer "66" sewing machine, Eaton-Hurlbut Paper Co., Malt Breakfast Food, Globe-Wernicke bookcases, C.T. Rain Cloth Co., Lisk roasters, Mellin's Food, Pabst Extract, Bensdorp's Cocoa, Armour's Extract of Beef, and Swift Bacon. Dozens more partial-page ads may be found for a variety of other products, among them Whitman's Chocolates, Lea & Perrins' Worcestershire sauce, Mira Music Box, Jell-O, Beech-Nut beef and bacon, Clapp steel ranges, Hoosier kitchen cabinets, Kalamazoo stoves, and MANY others. Finally, the magazine doubles as a great décor piece on a table in an antique-themed room. Overall, the magazine is intact and in fair condition, especially for its age. In my first three photos, you'll see that the covers have noticeable wear, including some staining/discoloration, edge chipping (with some small tears, and a 1.5" section of the bottom of the spine torn away), and some light wrinkles; the covers are also slightly loose from the binding, and the front cover has a non-erasable written message under the word "January." Inside, the pages are largely clean, with scattered light smudges and wrinkles. Also, the pages are crisp and strongly-bound and have a delightful mild old-paper smell. I found no marking or writing inside the magazine.
