He was the son of Maharaja Ranbir Singh and the youngest son of Raja Amar Singh, brother of former Maharaja Pratap Singh . He inherited the throne of Jammu and Kashmir from his uncle, Maharaja Pratap Singh. He married four times in his lifetime . He had a son named Karan Singh from his fourth wife, Maharani Tara Devi . Hari Singh was the last king of the Dogra Empire who kept the state of Jammu united for a century. The state of Jammu enjoyed autonomy and internal sovereignty until 1947. The state was not only multicultural and multi-religious, its far-flung borders are testimony to its formidable military strength and unique history.
