By the time the Description de l'Égypte was published, many of those who had begun the project were dead. Napoleon encouraged it as a general, subsidized it as emperor, and died in exile before it was completed. The work was continued by Louis XVIII and finally completed under the reign of Charles X. The Description's influence throughout Europe was significant —and it remains, even today, as a monumental resource for scholars, as well as for the general reader who will find its subject matter of absorbing interest. Napoleon received a mandate from the Directory to occupy Egypt and free the country from the tyrannical rule of the Mamelukes. When he set sail on the secret mission in 1798, he planned to expel the English, take control of the land around the Red Sea, and cut the Isthmus of Suez. He took seventeen thousand troops, seven hundred horses, and the machinery of war with him. It was an ambitious undertaking, but Napoleon also had other aspirations. He brought more than 150 engineers, scientists and scholars who were to study and describe ancient and modern Egypt in full detail. These learned men were distinguished members of the National Institute and included Gaspard Monge, the physicist; Claude-Louis Berthollet, the chemist; Jean-Baptiste Fourier, the mathematician after whom the Fourier equations are named; Deodat Dolomieu, the mineralogist after whom dolomite is named; and Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, the naturalist. They were accompanied by a contingent of printers, surveyors, and artists such as Dominique Vivant-Denon, who would later become the first director of the Louvre. At the time, Napoleon was a 29-year-old general who had just returned to France victorious from the Italian campaign. France had recently scored significant victories in Germany as well.
