Giovanni in Laterano" (The Plaza and Basilica of S. Giovanni in Laterano); it was originally published in 1775, but this example was printed substantially later, likely by Firmin-Didot in Paris between 1830-40 It's an unusual view what is now piazza John Paul II, with the nave facade of the church of St John Lateran, the baptistery, the obelisk, and the sanctuary of the Scala Santa This print is Hind 117.IV, with the number 695 along the right edge of the image. It lacks (as 19th c restrikes do) the vertical crease, as these plates were bound in elephant folios, rather than folded into smaller volumes. Size: Sheet is 22.5" (irregular) by 30.75", plate is 19" by 27.75" Mark: Signed lower left in plate. Condition: Light overall soiling; window of overall toning to image which can be seen when mat is lifted; bottom edge of sheet is uneven; some creasing/crumpling in sky; damp staining to upper left corner; soiling and light water spots to reverse of sheet; 0.75" long tear to right edge of sheet, entirely in margin; Shipping weight is 7.0 lbs.
