Description: This coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of the birth of Count ("Landgrave") Philip I of Hesse (sometimes called "the Magnanimous"), a nobleman who stood by Martin Luther against the the Holy Roman Emperor during the Protestant Reformation. Attempting conciliatory negotiations with the Emperor, Philip was captured and imprisoned for five years. Released in 1552, he returned to Hesse and tried to bring harmony between Protestants and Catholics. He died in 1567, age 57. The coin was issued in 1904 at direction of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, who appears behind Philip on the obverse. Surrounding the two is the Latin phrase "Verbum dni. manet in aeternum"—"The word of the Lord lasts forever." Very rare.
