Description: German language New Testament Bible published by Micheal Billmeyer in 1810 in Germantown, PA. The title page reads, in my best estimation: "Das Reue Testament unfers herrn und Heilandes Jesu Christi, nach ber Deutschen Ueberfekung D. Martin Luthers. Mit furzen Inhalt eines jeden Capitels, und vollstandiger umveifung gleicher Schriftstellen. Mie auch aller Conn und Fefttagigen Evangelien und Episteln, Sechfte Vuflage. Germantaun: Michael Billmeyer 1810". The book is bound in a smooth leather, five raised bands, and closed with two metal clasps. 537 pages, 4 x 6.75 x 1.4 inches. There is an inscription in German on the front flyleaf dated 1817 with a name "Jacob D-----, L--------". Very Good Condition. Clasps are functional; the part of the bottom clasp is broken at attachment to leather strip. Leather has light wear. Pages are foxed and toned. Binding is strong. The last page is 3/4 separated from the binding. From the Germantown Historical Society: "Michael Billmeyer (1752-1837) was a well-known printer and bookseller in the Germantown section of Philadelphia who catered especially to Pennsylvania German and Mennonite communities. In 1777 the British destroyed the Germantown (Pennsylvania) printing establishment of the Brethren (Dunkard) printer, Christopher Saur, Jr. Six years later Peter Leibert, a Brethren minister, and Michael Billmeyer, his Lutheran son-in-law, bought what was usable of the Saur equipment, and set up shop in Germantown [Leibert und Billmeyer], being more or less the successors of the younger Saur. This partnership continued for about three years, after which Billmeyer continued alone, and Leibert started a new printing business. The Michael Billmeyer house is part of Colonial Germantown Historic District, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972."
