In 1892, Roman de Tirtoff, who later called himself Erte, was born in St. Petersburg, which today is called Leningrad. Even as a little child he used to draw dolls and turn his mother's perfume bottles into fairies and handsome princes with a few bits of material. He watched his mother's seamstress as she copied elegant Parisian fashion from French journals and was fascinated. He became famous for art deco fashion.
