Represented New York's 8th congressional district in the United States Congress (1866-67). In 1833 he and his father-in-law, Anson Green Phelps, founded the trading firm Phelps, Dodge and Co.,which in 1908 became one of America's largest copper mining companies Phelps Dodge Corporation. His eldest son, William E. Dodge, Jr, assumed control of Phelps Dodge Company after his death. William George Curtis was an American writer, public speaker, magazine editor. He was a supporter of runaway African American slaves, advocate of women's suffrage; civil rights, civil service and educational reforms.
