His eldest son, William E. Dodge, Jr, assumed control of Phelps Dodge Company after his death. William George Curtis was an American writer, public speaker, magazine editor. He was a supporter of runaway African American slaves, advocate of women's suffrage; civil rights, civil service and educational reforms.
