Image size – 11.25” wide, 13.5” tall. Imprint size – 16.75” wide, 22.75” tall. Original print / lining framing - 23.5” wide, 29” tall. Frame size – 27.25” wide, 32.75” tall. Condition – untouched original surface, backing and framing, darkened paper, stain across bottom, a few small rub spots (last photo), original wavy glass, original gilt frame shows wear, missing two rosettes. 2129 - William Edgar Marshall, NYC (1837-1906). Known for his well-known portrait of Abraham Lincoln issued in 1866. A few years later of Grant. WE Marshall began his career mid 19th century as a watch engraver, then employed by the American Bank Note Company (vignette engraver/1858), He then opened a studio in NY where he produced the portrait of President A Lincoln that would hang in many schools across the USA (this portrait of President G Washington is considered in similar character). - This engraving is often regarded as the finest done of George Washington, the Father of our Country. This is one of only a few ‘artist proofs’ signed by Marshall. The original gravure belongs to the Library of Congress.
