Description: Up for consideration is a fine and exceedingly rare Antique miniature full length portrait Cabinet Miniature signed "Cosway" for Richard Cosway (1741-1823). The painting itself measures 4 inches by 5.75 and is signed in the lower right "Cosway". The pose is best known or associated with the recently rediscovered "Prince of Wales Portrait" which was supposedly owned by Maria Fitzherbert (his forbidden love) personally and sold for 325,000 pounds sterling plus buyers premium to around 416,000. The painting/sketch is shown with the gold frame. It is roughly double the size of the two miniature works that are for sale. As one can see the sketchy work is full of detail as "Cosway" used pencil with light touches of watercolor. The faces are identical and of course graphite sketches that are larger would appropriately be of finer detail. Please note that most of the photos were taken on a slight angle to account for clearer non glare photos and therefore slightly distorts the image and proportions. It is known that the Prince at the time had commissioned many paintings from Cosway and gave them away to his entourage and other close associates. This painting offered for sale may be one such painting that was given away. It is known that the Prince liked how he was portrayed by Cosway of which Richard was the self proclaimed portraitist to the young Prince. The accompanying Camillo Borghese, 6th Prince of Sumona (1775-1832) is also done by Cosway and will be included in the sale it is the painting on the left. Cosway was painting portraits of a number those around the Prince or George IV. The frames match same size...backing etc. and was purchased together so we will keep them together. Neither piece has been authenticated or taken out of the frame it has been in the same family since the 1920's or so. As for the young Regent...Prince George IV I cannot find another example in the historical record nor can we find and miniature copies prints or similar full portrait small painting of George IV by Cosway other than the original larger piece that was owned by Maria Fitzherbert that was rediscovered and sold in 2019 (it is shown here in a gold frame) So it is unique. With that portrait being lost and unavailable to the public eye for 200 years there is no wonder that similar pieces forgeries student copies reproductions cannot be found in the historical record. This strengthens our case that the piece is of the period and authentic. Likewise Cosway was accessible artist who painted many many portraits before meeting "The Regent Prince" through Maria Fitzherbert somewhere around 1784. No doubt further examination is necessary. We always stand behind our pieces with a full money back guarantee. If you have any questions concerns or something to share about this wonderful piece please message me. Shipping will be a bit tricky but we can work something out...Please understand we have been on eBay for 20+ years and have maintained a pretty good track record for selling only straight honest stuff always direct from private estates...we have handled some pretty heavy duty sales in the past so we are not strangers to spectacular works of art. Again thank you for taking the time to read this.. Best Regards, JohnJohnnyCrystal Est. 1987
