Description: This is a rare piece of sheet music for the song "'S WONDERFUL" from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the GEORGE GERSHWIN, IRA GERSHWIN, FRED THOMPSON and GERARD SMITH musical comedy "SMARTY" at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would be retitled "FUNNY FACE" before opening November 22nd, 1927 at the Alvin Theatre in New York City where it ran for 244 performances.) ..... The musical which introduced the standards, "What Am I Going To Do", "He Loves and She Loves" and "'S Wonderful", starred FRED and ADELE ASTAIRE and featured WILLIAM KENT, VICTOR MOORE, ALLEN KEARNS, BETTY COMPTON, GERTRUDE McDONALD, EARL HAMPTON, TED MacLEAN, EDWIN HODGE, WALTER MUNRO and DOROTHY JORDAN with VICTOR ARDEN and PHIL OHMAN at the Pianos ..... Side note: Originally called "Smarty", the musical first opened in Philadelphia on October 11th, 1927 to poor reviews. This led to major rewrites and caused critic-humorist Robert Benchley, who had contributed to the script, to walk out. The rewrites and changes continued as the musical moved to Washington, D.C. (October 31); Atlantic City (November 7) and Wilmington (November 14) before arriving at New York's Alvin Theatre where it became a huge hit ..... CREDITS: Music by GEORGE GERSHWIN ("Girl Crazy", "Lady, Be Good!", "Oh, Kay!", "Funny Face", "Rosalie", "Strike Up the Band", "Of Thee I Sing", "Porgy and Bess", "George White's Scandals"); Book by FRED THOMPSON and ROBERT BENCHLEY (replaced out-of-town by GERARD SMITH); Lyrics by IRA GERSHWIN; Sets designed by JOHN WENGER; Costumes designed by KIVIETTE; Choreographed by BOBBY CONNOLLY; Directed by EDGAR MacGREGOR; Produced by ALEX A. AARONS and VINTON FREEDLEY ..... DETAILS: The oversized eight page piece of sheet music measures approx. 9" X 12" inches and is copyrighted 1927 by New World Music Corporation, New York City ..... This item will be carefully packaged in a protective sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
