Base Unit, M.P. Unit, Culver City, California. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "I am taking the liberty of sending you a copy of the letter I sent to T//Sgt. Harry Horner's Commanding Officer about his contribution to the picture 'Winged Victory.' I would like to say again that in my experience during a good many years in pictures I have never come across a more intelligent, talented and adaptable man than Sgt. Horner. Very truly yours." The year he signed this letter, Cukor directed Winged Victory, I'll Be Seeing You and Gaslight. Winged Victory, based on Moss Hart's successful Broadway play, starred an array of Hollywood stars, many of them then serving in the Armed Forces, including Sergeant Edmond O'Brien and Corporal Lee J. Cobb. The story of people from all walks of life who join the Army Air Force, the film also starred Red Buttons, Jeanne Crain, Peter Lind Hayes, Judy Holliday, Mario Lanza, Karl Malden, Gary Merrill, Barry Nelson and George Reeves. GEORGE DEWEY CUKOR (1899-1983), who began his career as a stage director before directing Hollywood films for half a century, won the Best Director Academy Award in 1960 for My Fair Lady and was nominated for Best Director Oscars for Little Women (1932-1933), The Philadelphia Story (1940), A Double Life (1947) and Born Yesterday (1950). Cukor, who was known for getting the best out of his actors, directed Katharine Hepburn's first film, A Bill of Divorcement (1932), as well as such films as Dinner at Eight (1933), David Copperfield (1935), Romeo and Juliet (1936), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Adam's Rib (1949), Pat and Mike (1952), Heller in Pink Tights (1960) and A Star is Born (1954). The director reunited with Hepburn for his two made-for-TV films, Love Among the Ruins (1975) and The Corn is Green (1978). HARRY HORNER (1910-1994) was responsible for the continuity design for Winged Victory. As with many in the cast, he was serving in the Armed Forces when the film was made. Horner, who was a talented production designer on such diverse films as Stage Door Canteen (1943), The Hustler (1961), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) and The Jazz Singer (1980), was also the Art Director for The Heiress (1949) and became a director and producer of both feature films and television shows. He produced the TV series, R.C.M.P. (Royal Canadian Mounted Police, 1959) and directed episodes of a number of TV shows, including Gunsmoke (1955), Shirley Temple's Storybook (1958), Lux Playhouse (1958) and World of Giants (1959), as well as feature films including Red Planet Mars (1952), Beware My Lovely (1952), New Faces (1954) and The Wild Party (1956).
