Letter of recommendation for the appointment of Sergeant Furcy issued from Fort Riley, Kansas at the height of what is known as Bleeding Kansas, Bloody Kansas, or the Border War: a series of violent civil confrontations in Kansas Territory which arose from a political and ideological debate over the legality of slavery in the proposed state of Kansas. It was a one-state war, and has been called a tragic prelude, and overture, to the American Civil War which immediately followed it. Although Fort Riley was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails, a few weeks before the date of this letter proclamations of President Franklin Pierce led to nearly 500 U.S. Army troops, most likely many of these officers, arriving in Topeka, KS from Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth to try to stop the violence. This was followed by a fragile peace broken by intermittent violent outbreaks for two more years. In early 1861 when following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President, seven Southern states seceded from the Union and withdrew their delegations from Congress. Kansas was promptly admitted to the Union as a free state. At this point these officers were forced to choose sides. Seven future Generals, here signed, stayed loyal to the Union: Gettysburg hero John Buford (1826-63); military leader in the Dakota War of 1862 and first Governor of Minnesota Henry Hastings Sibley (1811-91); Lewis Merrill who combated guerillas in Missouri with his Regiment known as Merrill’s Horse; George Henry Gordon who fought at the battle of Antietam and at Gettysburg; Thomas J. Wood who participated in many battles, including the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Missionary Ridge; Thomas Forster Wright was the son of General George Wright and served in both Calvary and Infantry Regiments; Samuel D. Sturgis fought at the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. And, three future Confederate Generals, here signed: Frank Crawford Armstrong (the only General to serve on both sides during the war); James Morrison Hawes who served in the engagements at the Battle of Milliken’s Bend, the Battle of Young’s Point, and the defense of Vicksburg; Richard H. Anderson served at the Battles of Spotsylvania Court House, Vicksburg, and Santa Rosa Island. It is in very good to fine condition, with scattered staining, and a clipped lower left corner. An extremely rare combination of Civil War signatures on the same item. #13084ZOLWB Certificate of Authenticity This item has been authenticated and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by our parent company, History Makers Autographs.
