He was one of the first to use scat singing techniques. From 1911–1917, he made five recordings of "King of the Bungaloos", which was his most popular song. Nicknamed "The Ragtime King", he employed scat singing techniques on this song. Greene continued to perform, making about 64 recordings from 1912–1913 on the Pathé label. These are among the rarest of all his recordings. Several of these restored Pathé recordings are available in “Gene Greene The Ragtime King Rarities with Charley Straight - Piano (Recorded 1912-1913) Vol. 2”. The Pathé recordings were made while touring in England before returning to the U.S. He retired to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and ran a restaurant. He tried to make a comeback in vaudeville in New York City. He died of a heart attack backstage after the performance. This CD includes most of his recorded sides from Victor and Columbia. His style is varied in each recording using different dialects in his interpretations. Included are 3 versions of “King Of The Bungaloos" his most famous song.
