The lawyer is a conflicted man, determined to do his job and save the defendant, while also struggling to investigate and sort out the ambiguous facts of the case. Somewhere buried in the messy details there is truth, and somewhere behind the fragments of truth there is justice; however the world loves a celebrity and the world loves a scandal, and there's a job to be done. "Scandal in Eden", fictional as it is, covers the messy convergence of reality and idealism very neatly. The author has a good eye for a complex character, and his inner struggles ring very true.
