Information: The irrepressible Mr. Tompkins has dreams that introduce him to startling concepts in quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, and statistical mechanics. A story well told and with charming sketches by Gamow, one of the prime theorists of the Big Bang cosmology. From the book jacket: "This book is a sequel to the author's "Mr Tompkins in Wonderland" and is perhaps even crazier than that book was. Mr Tompkins, the modest bank clerk, is now happily married, and in the first chapter he and his wife Maud are ready to make their fortune by following a gambling system recommended by Esquire magazine. Physics and mathematics intervene, however, and before you can say "quasi-ergodic systems" Maud is being taken for a tour among the molecules inside her husband's whisky and soda. In another chapter Mr Tompkins goes dancing with the electrons of an atom of chlorine and is annihilated in the encounter with a murderous positron. In still another chapter Mr Tompkins learns the mysteries of the atomic nucleus, watching the tricks performed for him by an unusual person who seems to be a cross between the character of Gepetto, from "Pinocchio," and Lord Rutherford. Professor Gamow has made notable contributions to modern nuclear physics, but he cannot resist mixing in with his physics a certain fantastic humor. The result is a creation such as Mr Tompkins, from whom the reader painlessly obtains at least a bowing acquaintance with the theories of modern physics. Biographical Note: George Gamow was born in 1904 in Odessa, Russia, and became an American citizen in 1939. He graduated from the University of Leningrad in 1926 and continued his studies and research at the University of Copenhagen, Cambridge University, and the University of Gottingen. After teaching theoretical physics at the George Washington University for twenty-two years, he was appointed professor of physics at she University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Gamow has made many original contributions to theoretical physics, and has acquired world-wide fame as the author of scientific books and articles written for the layman, which won him the Kalinga Prize for popularization of science, awarded in 1956 by UNESCO. His many books include One Two Three .. Infinity, A Planet Called Earth, and A Star Called the Sun.
