This is the largest inland body of salt water in the world. being seven times larger than the Dead Sea of Palestine- It Carries from 19 to 22 per cent of salt, and calculations fix the total of salt in the lake at four hundred million tons- The waters are sluggish and green-hued- They are very buoyant and so clear that the eye can penetrate them to great depths. Gulls innumerable, whose breeding place is one of the eight Islands in the lake. frequent the waters. in which nothing lives except a small shrimp- The Western Pacific Railway crosses the southern end of the lake. The Groat Salt Beds, near Salduro Utah. This deposit is located 112 miles west of Salt Lake City. and ranges in depth from a few Inches at the outer edges to twelve or fifteen feet towards the center The bed is about eight miles wide by sixty-five miles long, and the Western Pacific Railway crosses near its center- It is a clear crystalized salt, white as table salt, and averages 98 per cent. pure as it comes from the bed. without any cleansing or refining whatever- The Palisades of The Humboldt, Nevada. At this point along the Humboldt River the brown, rocky walls rise perpendicularly on either side and form lofty palisades resembling the famous ones of the Hudson. Feather River In Front of the Feather River Inn, Gal. Here is shown a bend In the Feather River near the point where the iron bridge crosses from the Feather River Inn property to Mohawk- This particular point Is noted for its excellent fly fishing- as in fact is the entire mile and three quarters of river frontage owned by the Feather River Inn. Gold Lake, near Feather River Inn Station, California. This is one of the largest of a beautiful chain of lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains- These Lakes art. set in scenery not surpassed in America- and they contain more trout of several favorite varieties than any other lakes in the country. Deer. bear- mountain lion. etc-. are also found. making this a veritable sportsmen's Paradise-Feather River Inn Station, California. This is the most unique station on the entire line of the Western Pacific Railway, built entirely of logs under the supervision of "Jerry. the Guide.' ' formerly one of the guides in the Adirondack Mountains in New York- It is located about a quarter of a mile from the Feather River Inn, the approach to which is by a plank walk through the trees- Feather River Inn, California. This view does not give one the proper idea of beautiful Feather River Inn. The Inn Is built entirely of logs and is a very large structure with a wide porch surrounding it. Here may be seen the plank walk which leads to the station. On the other side of the Inn the plank walk is continued and leads to the various camps, some fifteen in number, scattered along the hillside- The Feather River Inn is one of the most complete resorts located in the State of California. and was constructed in 1915- Williams Circle, California. A very important advantage of the Western Pacific Railway Is its freedom from steep grades- Over the entire length of the line there Is no place where the gradeis more than one per cent- At this point in California, in order to maintain the low grade, it was necessary for the line to describe a circle- This circle is about one mile in diameter and is completed at the bridge shown in the distance-Placer Mining near Rich, California. Located at the foot of Serpentine Gorge, a portion of the Feather River Canon- The original name of this locality was Rich Bar. and in the early days of California's gold excitement it had a population of about 2,000- The foundation of the first Masonic Lodge established In the State is still to be seen here- The Feather River still contains much gold- in dust and nuggets. and miners may be seen working at various points along the track. Ben Lomond Peak and Feather River, looking toward Belden. California. This is one of the beauty spots along the line, as there Is a very fine timber growth and the beautiful Feather River winds itssinuous way through a ravine, in the background of which is seen rugged Ben Lomond.
