Curtis mustered in with the 16th New York Infantry as a Captain on May 15, 1861 to serve two years. He was mustered out on October 21, 1862 to become the Lieutenant Colonel of the 142nd New York Infantry being mustered in the very next day. He was promoted up through the course of the war. Awarded the Medal of Honor on November 28th, 1891 for bravery during the Battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina on January 15, 1865 as “the first man to pass through the stockade, he personally led each assault on the traverses and was four times wounded.” He fought in the Peninsula Campaign and was wounded at the Battle of West Point, Virginia. He fought at the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. He recieved a Brevet promotion to brigadier for his actions at the Battle of New Market heights. The unit fought at Manassas, West Point, Gaines Mill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and other battles. Handsome bound in navy blue cloth covers, with bright, impressed gold lettering on the cover and spine and the unit insignia on the cover, the book is clean and solidly bound throughout. The exterior has no bumping or rubbing and only lite edge wear. The gold lettering remains bright and sharp. The letters 16th NY are on the spine. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition; the book has no writing, smudging or foxing at all. The book is solidly bound; it has no looseness or lean and both hinges are solid. The book contains numerous illustrations, portraits. It has no pasteboards, stamps or other markings and it is not an ex-library book. Just one nice book….
