Description: A legal document in French dated August 25, 1694. It consists of one sheet of linen paper measuring about 14 1/2" x 10", folded in half vertically to make four sides each measuring about 7 1/4" x 10". There is a design at the top of the first page with the word Bretagne (Brittany). The text is handwritten in ink. There is an impressive signature on the third page. We cannot translate the old French spelling and make out the scrivener's handwriting on top of that, but a careful antiquarian could do so. The recording information on the last page indicates that it is a copy of a contract by Jacques and Margueritte Gougeor and Guillaume Pepin (?). The date is written on the last page in Arabic numerals and on the first page in script ("le vingt cinquiesme jour d'aoust mil six-cent quatre vingt quatorsieme"). The document is well preserved. There is occasional foxing and discoloration consistent with age. A portion of the last page is darkened, apparently because those panels formed the outer layer of the document when it was folded and stored. Our father kept this document in a plastic protector, which we continue to use. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
