Description: A fine soft ground etching and color aquatint by Ferdinand Jean Luigini (1870-1943). A wonderfully atmospheric piece, it is arguably Luigini's finest print and depicts a rainy day in a Flemish city square. It is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right and numbered in the lower left margin above the blindstamp of the Estampe Moderne, the top of the plate shows the publisher as l'Estampe Moderne, a respected Paris art publisher as well as the 1928 copyright information. Good sized, the plate measures 12 x 14 1/2 inches, the full sheet is approx. 19 x 21 1/2 inches with a deckel edge at top. It is printed on cream colored wove paper, aside from some spotting to the margins and smudging on the reverse, the print is in excellent condition. Ferdinand Jean Luigini (1870-1943) was a French painter and printmaker born in Orleans, his father was a well regarded music composer. Luigini studied in Paris under Leon Bonnat and Emile Verhaeren and was exhibiting his work by 1892. Within a few year he was exhibiting internationally and made a name for himself with his impressionist views of Belgium and Holland in both watercolor paintings and aquatint etchings.
